The Commission understands that the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted many people in many ways. Consequently, the Commission is offering a short-term COVID-19 rent and application expense deferral program.
This program is intended to provide certainty to lessees and applicants in need who are worried about their financial ability to meet rent obligations or pay application expenses. The program enables Commission staff to work with qualifying lessees and applicants on a case-by-case basis to negotiate (1) the deferral of rent, (2) the deferral of application processing expenses, and (3) the waiver of penalty and interest. The burden of proof shall be on the lessee or applicant requesting relief to establish that they qualify.
The qualification criteria are below:
- The lessee/applicant must certify direct adverse impact and provide evidence of financial hardship directly resulting from COVID-19 and related orders and directives.
- The lessee/applicant must have annual rent of less than $10,000.
- The lessee/applicant must request this deferral between April 29, 2020, and April 30, 2021.
- The lease must be in good standing
Lessees and applicants who do not meet these parameters may still apply for a deferral. We encourage any interested party to complete the COVID-19 Rent and Application Expense Deferral form. Commission staff will process the application and contact you to advise of the next steps.
If you cannot submit the electronic application and require a paper copy of the application or you have any additional questions about the program, you can contact us at CSLC.COVIDdeferral@slc.ca.gov.
